Understanding the Causes of Facial Pain
Chronic or persistent pain in the face, jaws, or neck can severely impact your quality of life. - Arthrogenous Disorders: Affecting the structural components of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ), or jaw joint. This includes injuries, arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis), or diseases affecting the cartilage and bone.
- Myogenous Disorders: Affecting the muscles of the face and jaws, such as bruxism (tooth grinding), Myofascial Pain Dysfunction (MPD), and localized muscle strain.
- Neurological Disorders: Pain caused by nerve issues, such as trigeminal neuralgia or complex regional pain syndromes.
The most common causes of pain we see are joint-related (arthrogenous) and muscle-related (myogenous).
Comprehensive Diagnosis and Medical Management
The goal of treatment is to return the joint to normal function with the least invasive methods possible. For 90% or more of patients, symptoms can be effectively managed without surgery. Our specialized medical management program includes:
- Detailed Examination: Advanced diagnostic imaging, often using our in-house 3D CBCT scans.
- Conservative Care: Soft diet recommendations, heat/cold therapy, and medication management.
- Occlusal Therapy: Splint therapy to manage the bite and reduce stress on the joint.

When Is Surgery Necessary?
